How to Afford Addiction Treatment with Rehab Scholarships

Rehab scholarships can greatly reduce the cost of addiction treatment. As most people know, substance abuse treatment programs aren’t cheap.

A month of residential inpatient care can cost up to $30,000. Methadone maintenance can cost anywhere from $4,277 to $13,395 and intensive outpatient programs can cost anywhere from $1,384 to $5,780 a month, if not more. In fact, it’s not unusual for outpatient treatment programs to cost up to $10,00 a month.

Not everyone can afford treatment for a substance use disorder (SUD), those who can’t afford treatment may look for a free rehab program through a government or state-funded programs or a treatment facility that offers a sliding scale fee. It’s important to note that most health insurance plans will also offer insurance coverage.

There’s one other option that many people aren’t aware of: rehab scholarships.

What Are Rehab Scholarships?

A rehab scholarship is essentially a scholarship that is provided by either a rehab facility or a corporation. This scholarship will cover the majority of the treatment costs. There usually isn’t any restriction on the types of treatments that an individual can opt for. Those who are eligible and are granted a rehab scholarship can use that scholarship towards their addiction treatment plan.

Most rehab centers will offer their own rehab scholarship. This means that those who are seeking treatment will need to do a little bit of research. They’ll need to look into whether the treatment center of their choice offers a rehab scholarship and the eligibility requirements. They’ll also have to apply separately to each rehab scholarship that they see.

What Treatment Are Covered?

In general, both inpatient and outpatient substance abuse and mental health facilities offer scholarships. Inpatient care tends to be a bit more expensive, which is why they have a higher need for scholarships. Most people will use rehab scholarships to pay for inpatient care.

While most rehab scholarships will not restrict the types of treatments that clients can receive, most scholarships will not cover treatments that are considered luxurious. Common examples of “luxury” treatments include massage therapy, acupuncture and equine therapy. While these treatments are proved to be effective, there are more affordable alternatives out there.
