Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) And Amazon.com Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) AWS Wavelength Expand 5G Edge And MEC

Verizon Communications Inc.’s (NYSE:VZ) 5G Edge and Amazon.com Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) AWS Wavelength are expanding 5G mobile edge computing (MEC) to Miami and Dallas. The expansion brings the number of cities with 5G MEC to seven with more expected by the end of 2020.

5G and MEC deployment targeting more cities

Businesses and developers in Miami and Dallas will now access the MEC platform. The movement of AWS storage and compute services to Verizon’s 5G edge will allow developers to create low latency applications for wireless edge devices and mobile end-users. It allows the creation of applications permitting massive throughput and extended battery life. The companies launched the 5G Edge with AWS wavelength in August in the Bay Area and Boston and have expanded to other cities that include New York, Washington and Atlanta.

The 5G Edge transfers data and processing conducted by applications and services near to the end-users at the edge. With the 5G edge, the roundtrip that data takes to travel will reduce, latency or lag time will improve, and it will enhance the response and efficiency of critical performance-impacting applications. The AWS Wavelength will bring AWS storage and compute services to Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband Edge which will enable innovators to create high-speed applications.

V2X and C-V2X platforms benefiting from 5G and MEC

MEC and 5G are vital building blocks for enabling connected and autonomous vehicles, and therefore they are essential in Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) and Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) spaces. Already several V2X and C-V2X innovators are testing their solution at Verizon’s 5G Edge network.

For instance, Renovo’s automotive data platform is benefitting from the 5G Edge and MEC deployment. They use the platform to intelligently index and filer Advanced Driver Assistance System vehicle data in near-real-time. The platform allows Renovo to prove new Network-ADA safety features in real-time alerts for vehicles in the vicinity. Renovo CEO and Co-founder Christopher Heiser said that 5G and MEC enables the company to offer new ADA services that keep drivers safe with information on hazards in real-time.
